The train to Matsumoto, misty white moaning of the land
reminded me of a movie I'd seen
that my mother used to put on for me on the big tv
I took my mother's scarf to Tokyo
Our apartment was a matchbox with our mattress on the floor
In the bathroom I cried for my grandma Joan
for not reading to her at night, for leaving her alone

My mother is the saint of all saints and her mother was one too
I took my mother's scarf across Japan to keep me warm when the wind blew

I took my mother's scarf to Shinjuku Gyoen
the garden was perfection but it still wasn't as perfect as my gran's
The sakura reminded me of the blossoms on the stone fruit trees
that lined my grandma's fence guarding the deceased
